Experience New Bern from a New Perspective

The First Light Paddle Tour is the most unforgettable way to start your day in historic New Bern, North Carolina. As the first golden light spills across the water, you’ll launch a stand up paddleboard onto the glassy surface of the Neuse and Trent Rivers — exploring the very same waters that have shaped this colonial river town since 1710.

This isn’t a generic paddle rental. It’s a small-group, professionally guided paddleboard tour in New Bern built for adventurers who want story, scenery, and a little adrenaline before breakfast. You’ll glide past the manicured gardens of Tryon Palace, slip under the city’s historic bridges, and beach your board at Jack’s Island for refueling before the rest of New Bern even hits snooze.

Whether you’re an experienced paddler or a curious first-timer, our on-land Masterclass gets you confidently paddling in minutes. By the time the sun is fully up, you’ll have logged a workout, captured a digital memory you’ll show everyone back home, and seen a side of New Bern that most visitors never do.

What to Expect on Your Sunrise Paddle

From land-based instruction to the final guided stretch, every stop is designed to ease you in, fuel you up, and send you home buzzing. Here’s how the morning flows:

  1. The Professional Clinic

We begin on land with a brief Masterclass in paddle technique and water safety — so you launch with confidence, no matter your experience level.

  2. The Sunrise Expedition

As the sun rises over the river, we’ll paddle the usually calm waters while your guide shares insights into the local ecology and the storied history of New Bern.

  3. The Bridge Loop

Glide beneath bridges and past the iconic Tryon Palace, offering a unique on-the-water view of the city you simply can’t get from shore.

  4. The Jack’s Island Fuel Stop

We’ll beach the boards at our local island stop for chilled water and a snack — the perfect refuel for the rest of our adventure.

  5. The Photo Session

We’ll capture the perfect digital memory of your sunrise expedition before we glide back to the launch point — postable and unforgettable.

  6. The Return & Recap

Back at our launch site, we’ll lead a guided stretch and paddle recap — so you head into your day feeling refreshed, recharged, and ready for whatever’s next.

How to Show Up Ready

Plan to get a little wet — and a lot stoked. Here’s what to wear and bring so you’re comfortable from launch to landing.

What to Wear

Close-fitting, quick-dry athletic clothing or a swimsuit. Avoid cotton and loose, baggy items — they get heavy when wet. Bring a towel for afterward.

Footwear

Barefoot or simple slip-on water shoes work best. Please avoid shoes with heavy treads — they make it more challenging to balance and move around on the board.

Sunglasses

Feel free to wear them — just make sure they’re secured with a retainer strap so they don’t end up at the bottom of the river.

What We Provide

Starboard stand up paddleboard, paddle, personal flotation device (PFD), expert guide, and provisions.
